Cable Knit Christmas Stockings

Cable knit Christmas stockings are a great way to make your holiday stocking unique. They’re also fun for new knitters, because the cables can be done using either a cable needle or just your knitting needles.

To create the cable, you cross stitches over each other, running up one side of the stocking and down another.

If you’re using a cable needle (a long needle with both ends blunt), you’ll work as if there were only two needles in your hand: slip stitches onto one end of the cable, knit them on two separate needles, then transfer those stitches back to their original place on the cable. If you’re knitting without a cable needle, just treat all four of your knitting needles as one device!

Cables can be worked either on front or back of stocking; they look great in any direction!

Reindeer Knitted Christmas Stocking

While you may not be able to knit your own Rudolph, you can make a stocking that will have everyone convinced.

This pattern is available in several different colorways, so choose one that suits your taste and decorating style best.

The pattern calls for sport weight yarn, but any weight of yarn will work as long as you use needles that are appropriate for the yarn being used.

Snowflake Knitted Christmas Stocking

Now you’re ready to knit. Here’s how:

Cast on 48 stitches.

Knit two stitches, purl two stitches and repeat this sequence until you have knit 17 rows. This will create a flat circle shape for your stocking.

Increase one stitch at each end of row every other row six times (to make room for the foot).

When you reach 36 rows total in height (12 inches), decrease one stitch at each end of row four times (to make room for the heel). At this point, it’s time to pick up your needles and start knitting around them in the round again! You should have 32 stitches left on your needle after decreasing.

Continue knitting in the round until you’ve reached 12 inches from where you started measuring from before—that’s about 30 rounds! Now it’s time to work some decreases so that we can form our toe shaping:

  • K2tog across all stitches for three rounds then knit until one stitch remains on right needle before beginning next step.
  • Repeat last 4 steps until 16 sts remain then k2tog across all sts once more.
  • Cut yarn leaving long tail; pull tail through remaining sts with tapestry needle so they don’t come undone while we begin working with another colorway!

Fair Isle Knitted Christmas Stocking

Fair Isle knitting is a technique that uses multiple colors in a single row. It’s very colorful and fun, plus it’s a great way to use up your stash of yarns.

This pattern works with any type of yarn (you won’t need much) and it’s easy enough for beginners but looks just as good as more complicated designs when you’re finished.

Fair Isle knitting can be used on all kinds of projects: gloves, hats, scarves—even Christmas stockings!

If you’ve been wanting to try Fair Isle but are nervous about changing colors mid-row or following complex patterns, this stocking will make the process seem simple enough for anyone who loves colorwork knitting.

Reindeer Ornament

The Reindeer Ornament pattern is available for free on Ravelry. To make this project, you’ll need:

  • yarn in the colors of your choice (I used Vanna’s Choice yarn in Gold, White and Red)
  • size US 5 knitting needles (or a needle size that gives you a gauge of 18 stitches per 4 inches)
  • a tapestry needle to weave in ends

Candy Cane Ornament

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn in red, white, and green
  • Size G (4.0 mm) hook

Instructions for the candy cane are given in both written and chart form. This pattern is worked from the top down with some short rows at the top to create a point for the “candy part” of your ornament.

The hanging loop is created by working single crochet around two stitches on either side of where you will be attaching it to your stocking or ornament base.

This pattern was designed by me, but many thanks go out to my friend Bethany who helped me test it!

Snowflake Ornament

Winter is a time to light up the house with warm colors, soft fabrics, and comforting smells. But it can also be a very cold time of year especially if you live in the Northern hemisphere. So this is a great opportunity to make some holiday ornaments that will brighten up your home and help keep you cozy!

In this tutorial we’ll show you how to make snowflake ornaments using just two colors of yarn (in whatever color combinations you like) on size 8 needles at a gauge of 4 stitches per inch.

These little snowflakes would look adorable hanging from your Christmas tree as part of an overall display of other handmade decorations for the holidays or even just on their own!

Materials:

  • worsted weight yarn in two colors (I used white and blue)
  • size 8 knitting needles
  • tapestry needle

To start off knit three stitches then turn it around without wrapping any stitches at all. This forms the first triangle point.

Knit another two rows using only one color before switching back over again so that now there are four strands coming out from each side which form points along with our original three strands formed earlier.

The finished product should look something like this!”

Santa Claus Ornament

This round and red-suited fellow has been a symbol of the Christmas season for centuries. He’s depicted as a jolly old man who brings presents to children, and his image is synonymous with love, generosity, peace and joy.

Some may be surprised to learn that Santa Claus isn’t real; he was created by American author Washington Irving in his 1809 book The History of New York.

Irving created this character because he wanted “to preserve the good old fashion’d look” during a time when many people were moving westward from New England into upstate New York the idea being that Santa Claus would bring them an old-fashioned Christmas experience!

Nordic Star Ornament

Nordic star ornaments are a traditional Scandinavian ornament. They’re also referred to as the “star of Bethlehem,” which is quite fitting since that star guided the Magi from east to west so they could find Jesus in a manger.

A nordic star is made with two triangles joined together in a symmetrical pattern. You can make yours in any color you like, but I’m partial to white and blue ones because they remind me of snowflakes and ice crystals!

Nativity Scene Ornament

If you’re looking for a quick and simple stocking pattern, this is your best bet. It’s available in several formats:

  • Ravelry download
  • Craftsy download
  • Etsy purchase
  • Printed pattern from our website (for international customers only)

Cross-Stitched Heart Ornament

  • You’ll need:
  • 3 skeins of embroidery floss (color of your choice)
  • a needle that is large enough to fit the floss through (I like using a tapestry needle)
  • a piece of cardboard or wood you can use as a needlework frame (you could also use a hoop, but it’s not necessary for this project)
  • The process:

Tack down one end of your floss about an inch from its tip with a small piece of masking tape so it doesn’t unwind while you work on other areas.

Then, pull the tail end away from where it’s taped and cut off any extra length before making a knot near where you started tacking yourself down you don’t want too much excess thread sticking out later when it’s time to hang up your new ornament! 2.

Begin stitching by making an X with two strands over one another at the top right corner of what will be your finished ornament; then work your way clockwise around creating more Xs until all five sides are complete and sew together securely at each corner point with another diagonal stitch pattern (see picture below).

Don’t worry if they’re messy looking—once everything has been stitched together into one piece we’ll cover them up with some fabric glue!

Ballerina Ornament

This is a great pattern for beginners, and it’s easy to customize by adding bows or buttons. You can use this ornament as a Christmas decoration or make several of them in different colors for your daughter’s ballet recital.

  • Balls Per Skein: 1, 3 or 5
  • Hook Size: H/8 (5mm)
  • Gauge: 1” = 7-1/2 sts in sc stitch pattern using size G hook

Note: Chain one will be at top of chain 2 and sc in first st instead of chain 1 on each row when more than one ball are used.

In this case you will not have enough chains on the foundation row to go around all your leg holes, so just skip over those stitches until you get back to the beginning again (the next time you need to work stitches around the leg holes).

Conclusion

I hope this list of knitted Christmas ornaments and stockings has given you some inspiration for your holiday knitting project.

It’s a fun way to bring the spirit of Christmas into your home, whether it’s just an ornament collection or a project that involves making gifts for others. If you want to learn more about knitting, check out our other posts on this topic!
